Diary 2011 – Week 45
I was walking across the moors of Winter Hill when I came upon the cairns on top of Two Lads Hill. They reminded me of a story by the late Arthur C Clarke, “The Sentinel” that the film “2001: Space Odessy” was based on.
Autumn Images of 2011
This is a short selection of pictures that I took during my walks in September and October that didn’t make it into any of my posts but which nevertheless I thought you might like to see.
Diary 2011 – Week 34
I had a great afternoon meandering around old and new paths in Rivington today. The first part was spent wandering around Tigers Clough taking pictures of the waterfall and the River Douglas.
Diary 2011 – Week 18
I took a walk through Wilderswood today, not having been there for some months and curious to see how the woods looked after the mass tree felling operation last February and March.
Winter Hill and Smithills Moor
This was an 8 miles walk on a sunny but extremely windy afternoon, during which I traversed a great deal of moorland and visited a remote reservoir that once fed one of the local mills in a bygone age.
Diary 2011 – Week 13
I took my dogs for a stroll around by Burnt Edge this afternoon, and although we didn’t actually cover much ground we did manage to get through two hours of ball playing. As with Monday’s stroll in this area I took a few pictures of the tree near the old stone wall, but this time I tried it from a couple of different vantage points.
From Wilderswood to Noon Hill
A six mile walk on a cold and windy afternoon, taking in wild moorland and some old cobbled roads, plus ancient cairns, farm ruins and the vestiges of long forgotten coal mines.
Winter Hill Panoramas
On some of my more recent walks on Winter Hill I’ve been taking panoramic videos, so I thought you might like to see them. If you wonder what the strange noises are on the sountracks it’s my heavy breathing. As with most of my pictures, Brett and Sam take every opportunity to hog the camera.
Exploring More of Wilderswood
Today’s walk was a brief visit to Wilderswood, this time to explore a little path I had noticed on a previous visit. It travels uphill alongside a small stream that makes its way off Rivington Moor.
Gentle Stroll
I took possession of a car on Monday to replace the one that was stolen last November, so I decided to take the dogs for a stroll in Wilderswood. It was an opportunity to test out my injured knee before venturing on more challenging terrain, and that meant a gentle stroll was the order of the day.
To the Wilderswood
The weather was dull and threatening rain, so I decided to forsake the moors in favour of exploring Wilderswood. I’d passed through it a couple of times recently, but only briefly as a more pleasant means of getting higher up Georges Lane. So today the dogs and I spent our whole walk in the woods, and discovered a little bit of its history.
