Diary 2011 – Week 44

I had two and a half hours of strolling across Smithills Moor with my two dogs Brett and Sam this afternoon. We set off from the car park on Winter Hill and strolled via Holdens Farm and Gilligants Farm before taking the old Coal Pit Road onto the moor.

Rivington to Anglezarke and Back

With the weather decidedly damp it was a day for keeping to the low terrain, so the dogs and I took a stroll from Rivington to Anglezarke Reservoir and back, taking in paths I hadn’t been on for some time.

Rivington to Hempshaws via Old Rachels

A walk of just under six miles on a warm and sunny July afternoon, from Rivington to Lead Mines Clough across rough pasture land and passing three farm ruins. I’ve been around these paths many times previously but never in an anticlockwise direction, so I thought it would at least make the views a little different.

2011 Diary – Week 11

Yesterday I had a walk through Lead Mines Clough and then took the path that lead past several farm ruins on the lower slopes of Anglezarke Moor. Part of the reason for this walk was to take a look at how the River Yarrow made its way through the valley on its way down to Yarrow Reservoir with a view to seeing if I could walk its length later in the year.

A Walk Through History

Today’s route was something of a walk through history, visiting an ancient monument to a bygone age and passing close by several derelict farms that gave echos of a hard life long since passed into memory.

A Pleasant Afternoon’s Stroll

This afternoon I went for a walk with John, a friend of mine, and his daughter Lisa to try and find a waterfall in Lead Mines Clough. After parking the car at the entrance to the clough we walked along the path alongside the River Yarrow that feeds Yarrow reservoir and Anglezarke Reservoir. About 1/4 mile along the clough we climbed up the side of the hill to the memorial pillar that was erected where a Wellington bomber had crashed during the Second World war.
