Last Walk of 2010

For the last walk of 2010 we had a gentle four miles stroll up to the Pigeon Tower, then returned through part of the Terraced Gardens.

Take Me to the Tower

Today we spent the aftenoon strolling around the Terraced Gardens in Rivington, part of the former estate of the late Lord Leverhulme. There are many permutations of routes around the gardens, but we only had time to visit a small selection.

From Wilderswood to Noon Hill

A six mile walk on a cold and windy afternoon, taking in wild moorland and some old cobbled roads, plus ancient cairns, farm ruins and the vestiges of long forgotten coal mines.

Moorland Meanderings

There are many paths to stroll along on and around Winter Hill. Some are shown on the Ordnance Survey maps, some are not. Today’s walk covered some of each as Brett, Sam and I spent a very enjoyable five miles and four hours of moorland meanderings.

To Great Hill and Round Loaf

Today my friend John and I decided to take the dogs for a stroll across Anglezarke Moor to visit Great Hill and the Neolithic burial mound called Round Loaf. The hot conditions made it hard work at times for me, but the excellent views made it well worth the effort.

Winter Hill Panoramas

On some of my more recent walks on Winter Hill I’ve been taking panoramic videos, so I thought you might like to see them. If you wonder what the strange noises are on the sountracks it’s my heavy breathing. As with most of my pictures, Brett and Sam take every opportunity to hog the camera.

Finding the Waterfall in Lead Mines Clough

Some time ago I saw a picture of a waterfall in Lead Mines Clough, so today I took the dogs for a walk there to see if I could find it. Whilst I’m not certain I found what I was looking for, it was nevertheless a very enjoyable walk.

Memories of Other Walks

I haven’t been out much these past few weeks, a small health problem (happily now sorted) and a knee injury keeping me confined to barracks. So I thought I’d drag out a few pictures to share with you that bring back memories of other walks.

Images of Rivington

Click on images to see larger versions. The weather has been vile this past couple of days, and I’m not one for setting off on a walk in heavy rain, so I thought I’d while away a few hours by putting together some of the pictures I have of Rivington and the surrounding area so [...]

Hunting Tigers – Part 1

Clough is an unusual word. You may wonder what it has to do with tiger hunting, but continue on dear reader and all will be revealed. In the English language the word clough has many meanings. For example, dictionary.com lists six results from a trawl of its database, but the one that interests me is [...]

Good Intentions

I just love Tescos All Butter Pain au Chocolat. That delicious flaky but stodgy pastry, the melt-in-your-mouth dark chocolate pieces, and the overlaying all-butter taste. Very naughty but very nice. Not so good though if, like me, you are trying to lose some weight. Not a lot mind, just a few pounds. Well 10lb actually. [...]
