This is from one of the many information boards dotted around the Terraced Gardens:
"Created at the turn of the Twentieth Century by William Hesketh Lever, later to become Lord Leverhulme, the Terraced Gardens were driven by his passion for landscape design and inspired by his many trips abroad. A myriad of pathways, terraces and stepped walkways across 45 acres of mixed woodland will reveal garden shelters, ornamental pools, miniature waterfalls, stone footbridges and adandoned buildings. You can explore the remnants of the many fascinating garden features surrounding the former residence of the late Lord Leverhulme by following the waymarked Rivington Terraced Garden Trail. Trail guides are available from the Great House Information Centre."
