A Stroll Around the Hope Valley

Posted Under » Country Walks

For the second week running JohnB and I went for a stroll around the Hope Valley, but this time we mainly chose tracks we hadn’t been on before. The weather was rather mixed but the views, as ever in the Peak District, were stunning.

Cave Dale and the Great Ridge

Posted Under » Country Walks

This was a walk I hadn’t done for about five years, so I was looking forward to introducing my friend John to the scenic beauty of the Peak District. Our walk took in the Great Ridge from Mam Tor to Back Tor, followed soon after by a climb up Cave Dale.

Exploring More of Wilderswood

Posted Under » Country Walks

Today’s walk was a brief visit to Wilderswood, this time to explore a little path I had noticed on a previous visit. It travels uphill alongside a small stream that makes its way off Rivington Moor.

Wet Walk to Hollinshead Hall

Posted Under » Country Walks

I hadn’t been to the woods near the village of Tockholes for some months, so I decided it was about time to remedy things. Unfortunately I choose a rather wet afternoon, just as well I had my waterproofs with me.

To the Wilderswood

Posted Under » Country Walks

The weather was dull and threatening rain, so I decided to forsake the moors in favour of exploring Wilderswood. I’d passed through it a couple of times recently, but only briefly as a more pleasant means of getting higher up Georges Lane. So today the dogs and I spent our whole walk in the woods, and discovered a little bit of its history.

Walking the Dean Ditch

Posted Under » Country Walks

Today’s excursion was a five mile walk taking in some of the moorland on Winter Hill and walking most of the length of the Dean Ditch, then returning via Dean Mills Reservoir and the Coal Pit Road. Not the longest walk I’ve done by any means but quite a tiring, not to mention squelchy one.

Afternoon Stroll on Winter Hill

This was just a gentle afternoon’s stroll, mainly on paths not shown on the map. I didn’t have any particular route in mind, just going wherever came to mind next, whilst heading towards Dean Ditch.

From Wilderswood to the Coal Pit Road

This walk was about 4-1/2 miles, taking in lots of beautiful moorland and covering part of a historic route of 1896 that ensured the general public continued to have access to this terrific area.

Edale – Kinder Plateau – Edale

Posted Under » Country Walks

This was a very pleasant but demanding (at least for me) eight miles circular walk, starting at the village of Grindsbrook Booth in the Edale Valley and taking in the Kinder Plateau with a return via Jacobs Ladder. It was also Connor’s second walk of this length and he was looking forward to it eagerly.

Just a Walking the Dog(s)

Posted Under » Country Walks

I often take my dogs for a walk up on Winter Hill, it’s nice and quiet and they can have a good run about on the moor (providing there’s no sheep in the vicinity!). This time though I thought we’d have a slight change and take a stroll via Wilderswood and up to the cairns on Two Lads hill, though as you will see from the pictures, Two Lads is fast becoming No Lads hill.

Stroll from Winter Hill to Walker Fold Woods

Posted Under » Country Walks

A pleasant afternoon’s stroll from Winter Hill to Walker Fold Woods, with great views of the surrounding moors and farmsteads. This walk was about four miles and took me and my two dogs (Brett and Sam) about 2-1/2hr.
